Portugal and the Douro River Cruise

October 1, 2025 – October 11, 2025

After many requests, we are excited to explore Portugal on our next international adventure! We are teaming up with our preservation colleagues at the Landmark Society of Western New York and some of their Rochester partners: Rochester Rainbow Union, PUSH Physical Theatre, and the NYS Puppet Festival, for a cruise along the Douro River. This trip will raise funds for AARCH’s preservation work in the Adirondacks and allow the guests from each group to meet each other and learn about the other not-for profits. We also will have the opportunity for special programming including short performances to enjoy PUSH and Puppets in Portugal!

Itinerary Highlights

The tour begins in Lisbon with two days in this magical city concluding with dinner at a Fado music venue. Next, we are off to Porto by coach with stops at Fatima, the important Catholic pilgrimage site and Coimbra, the famous university town where some of us might be able to find the little restaurant that serves roasted suckling pig, a local delicacy. In Porto we will board the luxurious MS Emerald Radiance for the next seven nights on the Douro river.

As we cruise along the Douro river, enjoy gourmet dining onboard and complimentary regional wines, beer, and soft drinks with lunch and dinner. We will make stops and take excursions to wonderful cities and towns throughout Portugal where we will experience the architecture, landscape, history, culture, and wineries. And the locks! What a great experience going through the many locks along the river. Spain is also included in the tour with a stop at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Salamanca, where a lucky guest may even get to dance with the Tuna music band! Two more stops along the Douro on our return trip to Porto will expose us to more of the breathtaking countryside and historic sites. Porto will excite you with its eclectic mix of modern and ancient architecture and we will enjoy a lovely sunset cruise in the capital city.

Why Travel with AARCH

Adirondack Architectural Heritage has organized and offered several hundred day-long and multi-day tours across the Adirondacks for over 30 years. In 2016, we began offering international travel with a trip to Cuba. We took a group of members and friends to this country, off-limits to Americans for decades, and learned a great deal in our time there. Following the success and excitement of this first trip, we organized a second adventure to Cuba in 2017, then travelled to Armenia in 2018 and Slovakia in 2019. Our most recent international trip was to Guatemala in 2023.

AARCH tourgoers have the opportunity not only to explore the world’s rich diversity in architecture, culture, and landscapes, but also to make life-long friends. This unique travel experience allows you to explore new landscapes with a group of preservation- and architecture-minded individuals from diverse backgrounds. Plus, these trips help support AARCH’s work in the Adirondack region. We hope you can join us on our next adventure to Portugal!
