Rustic Camps of William Coulter: Eagle Island & Moss Ledge (FULL)
Friday, August 25, 2023
William L. Coulter was the first major professionally trained resident architect in the Adirondacks. He is well known for designing camps that were typically sited on shorelines overlooking lakes and the mountains beyond, with huge sweeping porches extending from the main building where residents could take full advantage of these signature Adirondack views. These defining features of Coulter’s work are on full display at two beautiful historic complexes on Upper Saranac Lake. On this outing, we will tour Eagle Island, an 1899 complex National Historic Landmark, and one of the finest examples of “Great Camp” architecture in the region. We will also gain special access to Moss Ledge, a spectacularly restored private camp with commanding views of the lake.
This tour is led by AARCH Staff as well as both Eagle Island’s expert staff and Moss Ledge’s dedicated owners. The tour begins at 10 AM and ends around 3 PM.
The fee is $55 for AARCH members and $65 for non-members.
Please note that this tour involves a short boat ride and around a mile of walking on dirt paths and some uneven terrain.
