Remsen in the Adirondack Foothills

Thursday, September 19, 2024

Known for its Welsh heritage, distinctive stone buildings, popular barns, railroad history, and proximity to both the Hinckley Reservoir and the Adirondack Park, the community of Remsen boasts a vibrant history all its own. Nestled in the Adirondack foothills, Remsen may be an off-the-beaten-track place, but it features a main street rich with architectural hidden gems. The community’s agricultural and commercial roots gave rise to numerous vernacular farmhouses, Italianate storefronts and former hotels, and other folk Victorian buildings that dot its quaint downtown. On this brand-new outing happening ahead of Remsen’s popular annual Barn Festival, see the community at its best as we explore this historic stop on the Adirondack Railroad through tours of several public and private buildings. We will visit the iconic, National Register-listed Stone Meeting House, built as a Welsh Calvinistic Methodist church in 1831 and boasting the largest Welsh library in the United States. Other stops include special access to the village’s historic railroad depot, several other historic civic buildings, a few of its proudest homes and structures, and some other surprises as well.

This tour is led by Remsen historian and resident, Megan Plete Postol, members of the Remsen/Steuben Historical Society, and home and business owners. The tour begins at 10 AM and ends around 3:30 PM.

The fee is $55 for AARCH members and $70 for non-members.

Please note that this outing includes 1.5 miles of walking on pavement and sidewalks.
