FULL: Massena on the St. Lawrence Seaway
Friday, July 24, 2026
Historically and today, Massena has been defined by its relationship with the mighty St. Lawrence Seaway. Water power aided the pivotal development of aluminum company Alcoa, which has maintained a major presence in Massena since 1902. Today, Alcoa is the oldest continuously operating aluminum smelting operation in the world. Access to the Seaway has also helped Massena become a hub for transportation and fishing as well. On this outing, take a deep dive into Massena’s history through its notable and scenic places. First, we will explore the village downtown featuring some wonderful examples of late-19th century Neoclassical architecture and more. We will explore downtown anchors like the historic Schine Theater, a current preservation effort; a fine Gothic Revival-style structure at the Sacred Heart Church; and the Celine G. Philibert Cultural Center and Museum. Next, enjoy lunch at Gristmill Brewery, housed in a reimagined historic mill building abutting the Grass River. Then we will learn about the aluminum industry and Alcoa’s operation in Massena as we explore some of the company’s operation. Lastly, finish the day with a stop at the Seaway Visitor Center and experience the scenic Eisenhower Lock — if we are lucky, we may witness the spectacle of a passing freighter!
This outing is led by Massena Town Historian Khelsey Charter, long-time resident Randy Peets, and other local property stewards. The tour starts at 10 AM and ends at 4 PM.
The fee is $70 for AARCH members and $85 for non-members. Lunch from Gristmill Brewery is included.
Please note that this outing will feature roughly two miles of walking, mostly over pavement and sidewalk.
