The Marvels of Malone
Monday, August 18, 2025
As a gateway community to the Adirondack Park, the village of Malone prospered during the late 19th century and its extraordinary architectural diversity highlights this legacy today. Affordable land and booming industries in growing hops and harvesting lumber drew people to the area in the early 1800s. Later, the community became an important railroad hub. This prosperity led to the construction of hundreds of architectural gems, including elaborately adorned and painted Queen Anne and Italianate homes, many still meticulously maintained, while its downtown features numerous historic commercial buildings that contribute to the character of this proud place. Through the efforts of the Malone Revitalization Foundation, the local Chamber of Commerce, and several other community organizations and partners, Malone has undertaken intensive plans to rejuvenate its historic buildings and use historic preservation as a force for change. On this tour, learn about these efforts and share in the rich history and superb architecture of one of the region’s up-and-coming places. We will tour several historic neighborhoods, explore its rich downtown core, and peek inside some wonderful examples of Malone’s treasured 19th-century homes.
This tour will be led by the Malone Revitalization Foundation’s Mary Scharf and Boyce Sherwin, as well several local guides and building owners. The tour begins at 10 AM and ends around 3:30 PM.
The fee is $55 for AARCH members and $70 for non-members.
