Heart Lake’s Adirondack Loj

Saturday, January 6, 2024
10:00 am – 4:30 pm

AARCH and the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) are collaborating on a special program that highlights the history of ADK’s renowned Heart Lake complex in Lake Placid. The day will start at ADK’s historic Adirondack Loj, designed by Adirondack architect William Distin, with the earliest section built in 1927. ADK staff will share the history of the Heart Lake complex and the former and current Loj buildings. A tour of the Loj and the complex immediately surrounding it will follow the presentation.

The group will gather for lunch, included in your registration, and then will split into two groups for either a one-mile snowshoe hike around Heart Lake or a 4.6 mile snowshoe hike to Marcy Dam and back. Each group is limited to 15 people, so you will choose from the following two hikes when you register:

  • Heart Lake Hike: This group will see some of the Heart Lake lean-tos and the starting point of other trails into the High Peaks on a one-mile snowshoe hike. The trip will be led by ADK’s Outdoor Skills Coordinator and will take up to 2 hours.
  • Marcy Dam Hike: This group will snowshoe to Marcy Dam, 2.3 miles in each direction (4.6 miles total) with an elevation gain of 350 feet. This guided hike will cover the history of the trails, Marcy Dam itself, and other infrastructure at the dam and along the way. The hike will take about 4 hours.

Lunch is included in the tour, but participants can also choose to stay for dinner and spend the night as part of a special discounted package price. Please contact the Loj directly by December 26 to make dinner and overnight lodging reservations, 518-523-3441 ext. 1 or loj@adk.org.

Register by 9:00 am on Friday, December 22. Please indicate when registering if you need to borrow snowshoes from the Loj or if you plan to bring your own.
