Grange Halls, Past & Present

Wednesday, June 26, 2024

Grange Halls were the heart of our region’s agricultural communities for decades. Today, many of these storied buildings remain in use as community centers, dual-purpose business and living spaces, and art studios, while some continue their commitment to local farms. Each retains distinctive, yet cohesive architecture, all emerging at a time in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when form and function fostered a strong sense of place and identity from one community to the next. On this outing, we will experience some of the Champlain Valley’s most iconic and architecturally significant Granges. In Wadhams, we’ll see and learn about the current revitalization efforts of local preservationists to bring life back to the site. Next, dedicated volunteers in Whallonsburg and Keeseville will showcase their continued public-facing use that keeps their respective communities culturally and socially enriched. Lastly, get a “behind-the-scenes” look at the Jay Craft Center and learn how local artisans reactivated the building. Enjoy a fresh, local lunch from the recently opened River & Rails Market & Deli in Whallonsburg as you encounter new stories in old buildings.

This tour is led by former AARCH Executive Director Steven Engelhart and passionate Grange supporters. The tour begins at 10 AM and ends around 3:30 PM.

The fee is $60 for AARCH members and $75 for non-members. Lunch from River & Rails Market & Deli is included.
