Historic Essex

Wednesday, September 23, 2026

Situated on the scenic western shore of Lake Champlain with spacious views of Vermont, the community of Essex features an astonishing 150 significant buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Following the American Revolutionary War, this little settlement prospered as an active center for shipping, industry, and commerce. Because of its astonishing civic growth in the first half of the 19th century, Essex maintains an exceptional collection of Greek Revival architecture. On this outing, you will explore numerous early- and late-19th-century structures across Essex. There will be special opportunities to see the interiors of several private buildings, including a visit to two restoration projects belonging to noted preservation architect John Mesick.

This outing is led by AARCH board member, Essex resident, and historian David Hislop, local property owners, and preservation architect John Mesick. The tour begins at 10 AM and ends around 4 PM.

The fee is $70 for AARCH members and $85 for non-members.

Please note that this outing includes about a mile of walking on pavement and sidewalks.
