Dry Laid Masonry Workshop

Friday, October 10, 2025

*Miss this workshop? Check out this short video from the day!

Thoughtfully laid stonework has an irresistible harmony. The organic form and arrangement of stones in masonry projects is both functional and artistic. Skilled masons have much to teach us about shared knowledge, solid planning, a practiced hand, and patience. At AARCH we get many questions about masonry and this year, we’re proud to offer a hands-on workshop dedicated to the trade. Join us at Indian Lake’s former Wakely Golf Course Lodge to learn the basics of dry laid stonework and get hands-on experience working on a stone wall. Not only will you come out of this workshop with a better understanding of what is involved in this work, but you’ll pick up tips on preparing a site, selecting stones, and how best to assemble and arrange them. Whether you’ve done some small projects or never picked up a stone, you will come out of this experience with helpful knowledge to tackle your own home and garden projects.

Kent Gregson is a master stone mason with decades of experience working in the Adirondacks. He contributed his expertise to the restoration of Great Camps, homes, and buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Alongside restoring stone masonry, Kent built many fireplaces, walls, and landscape features, including dry laid walls, walkways, stairs, patios, gardens, and stream beds.

This workshop is led by long-time Adirondack stone mason Kent Gregson and runs from 9 AM to 4 PM.

The fee is $100 for AARCH and PLNYS members and $120 for non-members. Lunch is included.

This program is co-sponsored by the Preservation League of New York State.

Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH) supports the appreciation, care, and continued use of historic places — from everyday buildings to industrial and landmark sites — so these places are an active part of Adirondack community life for generations to come.
