FULL: Upper Chateaugay Lake
Tuesday, July 28, 2026
Tucked away in the western reaches of Clinton County, Upper Chateaugay Lake offers a serene setting and incredible historic structures, all which help to tell its story. Iron ore prospectors and hunting and fishing camps of the early to mid-19th century gave way to a resort era that produced numerous hotels into the early-20th century. This era helped to introduce Upper Chateaugay Lake and its surroundings to well-heeled patrons who established finely-built camps of their own. Much of the lake’s architecture seamlessly blends rustic elements with early 20th century functionality to create a unique understated elegance in this beautiful corner of the Adirondacks. On this outing, we will gain special access to several of these remarkable structures, many of which are private today. We will also visit Camp Jeanne d’Arc, a girl’s camp established in 1922 that connects a community of women and girls to the lake’s beautiful natural surroundings. Lastly, we will journey by boat across the scenic lake to visit Cragsmere, a thoughtfully-designed take on modern rusticity. This 1914 camp is perched atop a wooded, rocky outcrop and offers spectacular views of the lake.
This outing is led by several passionate, long-time property owners, and well as Camp Jeanne d’Arc staff. The tour starts at 10 AM and ends at 4 PM.
The fee is $80 for AARCH members and $95 for non-members.
Please note that this outing includes walking over uneven terrain and a short boat ride. Participants will be asked to carpool.
