Cape Vincent on the Adirondack West Coast
Friday, July 25, 2025
Boasting a vibrant range of 19th- and early-20th-century architecture, Cape Vincent sits on the busy shores of the St. Lawrence River where it’s joined by Lake Ontario. These buildings reflect the village’s close relationship, historically and today, with these two major bodies of water. The community saw action during the War of 1812 and today hosts a lively fishing and boating culture that draws people to its charming downtown. Rich in architectural styles, Cape Vincent features Greek Revival and Second Empire residences abutting Gothic Revival churches and Italianate commercial and industrial buildings. On this outing, experience some of these buildings first-hand as we explore Cape Vincent through its colorful architecture. Our day will start at the stone barracks that housed soldiers during the War of 1812, which today hosts the Cape Vincent Historical Museum. Next, we will explore a 19th-century steam-powered gristmill-turned fishery which today serves as a research station and aquarium. Other stops will include several private historic homes and a visit to the scenic Tibbetts Point Lighthouse.
This tour is led by local experts Mary Jordan and Hope Hammond as well as several community members and passionate homeowners. The tour begins at 10 AM and ends at 4 PM.
The fee is $65 for AARCH members and $80 for non-members. Lunch is included.
Please note that this outing will feature 1.5 miles of walking over pavement.
