Mooers: Border Town on the Great Chazy

July 31 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Wedged between the Great Chazy River and the United States-Canada border, Mooers retains an impressive number of historic buildings and strong small-town spirit. Although Mooers is small, it offers a nuanced story of how a North Country border community changes over time and how historic preservation aims to play a role in its future. On this outing, we will explore some of the defining sites that carry the town’s history forward. First, venture to Mooers Camp, an interdenominational campground with a long presence in the community and numerous rustic cottages. Next, travel up to Mooers’s historic Border Inspection Station built by the federal government in the early 1930s when bootlegged alcohol and other contraband smuggling hit a fever pitch in the region. After that, we will experience the restored Mooers Junction Train Station and its charming accompanying caboose. Lastly, we will explore historic homes, Mooers’s United Methodist Church, and see the town’s iconic 1880s Whipple Truss bridge.

This outing is led by Mooers Town Historian Vicki Brassard and several local hosts. The tour starts at 10 AM and ends at 4 PM.

The fee is $65 for AARCH members and $80 for non-members.

Please note that this outing will feature roughly one mile of walking on uneven and unpaved terrain.
