FULL: The Art & Architecture of Monhegan
September 27 – September 29
This program is full – please contact Jackie to be added to the waitlist.
This fall, AARCH will return to Monhegan Island, 10 miles off the coast of Maine, to explore the artistic and architectural connections between the island and the Adirondacks. These places are principally connected through the work of late artist Rockwell Kent (1882-1971), an intrepid traveler who in 1927 made his home in the Adirondacks. Before Kent settled at Asgaard Farm near Ausable Forks, he lived, painted, and designed buildings on Monhegan Island. Monhegan’s small, picturesque village, fishing fleet, and beautiful landscapes have attracted painters and other artists for more than a century. In addition to Kent, artists drawn to the island include painters Alice Kent Stoddard (Kent’s cousin), James Fitzgerald, and Jamie Wyeth.
From our base at the Island Inn, we will explore Kent’s architectural work, painting, and life on Monhegan along with the work and lives of other artists on the island. We will visit Kent’s cottage, studio, and other buildings he designed or built there with expert guides from the Monhegan Museum of Art & History. We will dive into the broader natural and cultural history at the Monhegan Museum. Participants will also have time to traverse the island’s paths and to enjoy its forests, coastline, and vistas at their leisure.
We will meet at the Monhegan Boat Line ferry in Port Clyde at 2:00 PM on September 27, for a 3:00 PM ferry, and depart Monhegan on the 12:30 PM ferry on September 29.
Participants should be prepared to walk up to two miles on uneven dirt or gravel roads and hiking paths.
Please contact Erin with any questions.
