Underwater Archaeology of the Revolution: Current & Future Research on Lake Champlain
Tuesday, March 25, 2025
Last spring, AARCH took our exploration of Valcour Island underwater! For over 20 years, we have trekked across Valcour on our summer programs, examining its history through the remaining structures, landmarks, and natural features across two-mile island. We dove deeper into the pivotal role that Lake Champlain played in the American Revolution at Valcour and further south at Arnold’s Bay in our upcoming webinar with the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum.
With the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding on the horizon, the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum has been focusing its research activities more closely on the American Revolution. In this webinar, the museum’s executive director, Chris Sabick, reviewed their ongoing research efforts focused on the Revolutionary War, with a particular focus on the Battle of Valcour Bay (October 1776) and its aftermath. We also discussed excavations at Arnold’s Bay and recent documentation and planning for research on the gunboat Spitfire, as well as plans for future interpretation of the Revolutionary War on the museum’s campus and online.
